Ruth A. Nagler
Jackson, MI, formerly of Stanwood. Ruth A. Nagler, 97, of Jackson, MI, formerly of Stanwood, Iowa died November 16, 2008, in Jackson. Ruth was born May 1, 1911 in Stanwood, Iowa.
Ruth began her teaching career in 1937 in Fontanelle, Iowa. Ruth taught at Tipton, Lisbon, and Sumner, Iowa. She also taught at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa and Grand Island, Nebraska. In 1946 Ruth came to teach at Jackson High School and finished her teaching career at Parkside High School in 1980 after 43 years. Ruth received her B.A. degree from Cornell College, in Mount Vernon, and her M.A. degree from the University of Michigan. She also completed additional work at the University of Denver and University of Nebraska. Ruth was elected to Delta Pi Epsilon Honorary Business Education Graduate Fraternity. She was a member of Jackson Education Association, Michigan Education Association, Delta Pi Epsilon and formerly a member of Michigan Alumnae Club of Jackson. Ruth was a long standing member of Trinity Lutheran Church, active in Trinity's Book Nook and Bible studies.
Graveside services for Ruth Nagler will be held at Stanwood Cemetery on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 10:00am, with Reverend Tim Jones officiating.
Ruth is survived by one nephew and one niece.

Carolyn Deerberg
Lowden, IA. Carolyn Deerberg, 91, of Lowden, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 5, 1008 at Trinity Hospital in Bettendorf, Iowa after a lingering illness. Carolyn was born in Lowden on June 2, 1917, to Paul and Emma (Peters) Conrad. Carolyn and Lorenz Deerberg were married on December 5, 1937, in Bennett, Iowa. Lorenz died on November 12, 1998.
Funeral services will be held at Zion United Church of Christ at 10:30am on Saturday, November 8, 2008, with Reverend Barbara Muhs officiating. Burial will be at Inland Cemetery in Bennett. Visitation from 5:00-7:00pm on Friday, November 7, 2008 at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence, Iowa.
Carolyn is survived by her daughters Carol (Vern) Schroeder of Clarence and Jolene Wilson of Crosby Texas; son Dean of Ledgewood New Jersey; 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Carolyn was proceeded in death by her parents, husband and a brother.

Opal Glover
Wheatland, IA. Opal Glover of Wheatland, died peacefully November 3, 2008, at Genesis East Hospital in Davenport, Iowa surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be at 10:30am Friday, November 7 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Wheatland, with Reverend Lynne Bisson officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery near Wheatland. Friends and family may call from 4:00-8:00pm Thursday, November 6 at Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland. The family requests memorial tributes be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ in lieu of flowers.
Opal Leora Ray was born in Isadora, Missouri on February 7, 1920, the daughter of James and Laura Ray. She married Marvin Glover of Bedford, Iowa, in San Luis Obispo, California on July 12, 1943 shortly before he left for overseas to serve in World War II. She lived in Long Beach, California for the two years of her husband's overseas military service after she had participated in a government program training young women for defense work in Maryville, Missouri, making small engine parts. She and the other women she trained with were known as the "Rosie the Riveter" bunch. After the war she and Marvin moved to Center Junction, Iowa, where they managed the locker plant. Over the years she and Marvin became parents of 3 daughters: Marcia Ann, Mary Louise, and Marla Rae. In 1952, they moved to Toronto, Iowa where they owned and operated Toronto Locker Service until 1966. Opal returned to work at the Rock Island Arsenal in 1972 doing what she had been trained for back during World War II and retired from the Arsenal in 1984. She and Marvin spent many wonderful years on their acreage in Toronto where they enjoyed raising both bountiful vegetable and flower gardens. She also spent many hours bird-watching and loved being outdoors. After Marvin's death on November 4, 2003, she sold their acreage and moved to Lincolnway Assisted Living in Wheatland where she spent her last years very comfortably. Opal spent many hours during her retirement years making handmade quilts for each of her daughters and grandchildren. She had just finished piecing together a quilt several days before her death. Opal loved her church, had a very deep faith and attended weekly Bible study. She also enjoyed participating in several card clubs. Opal was a marvelous piano player; she had never taken a piano lesson and played solely by ear. She also cherished the times when she was able to return to her childhood home in Missouri. She was a faithful member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
Opal is survived by her three daughters Marcia Glover, of Elma,Iowa, Mary Schanze, of Dewitt, Iowa, and Marla (Dannie) Bell, of Chatsworth,Georgia; six granddaughters Lori Dalton, Lisa Roether, Michelle and Melissa Schanze, Meagan Weaver, and Sally Bell; six great-grandchildren; sisters Alice Ridge and Helen Roach; and Brother Wilbur Ray all of Grant City, Missouri. She is also survived by her dear friends June Wentworth and Elfreida Kroemer.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, her parents, six sisters and three brothers, and her son-in-law Michael Schanze.
The family wishes to acknowledge he compassionate and loving care she received while in Intensive Care at Genesis East. Opal was a strong and loving wife, mother and grandmother to her family and a faithful friend to many. She will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Mom. Our love goes with you.

Reuben D. Strackbein
Lowden. Reuben D. Strackbein, 83, of Lowden, Iowa died Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa after a sudden illness. Reuben was born on May 24, 1925, in Lowden, to Francis and Lydia (Conrad) Strackbein. Reuben served in the Army and was retired as a custodian from Cornell College. He moved to the Veterans Home in 2001. He was a member of the Lowden American Legion.
Funeral services for Reuben Strackbein will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, October 31, 2008 at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence, Iowa, with Reverend Barbara Muhs officiating. Inurnment will be at Lowden Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held before the service, starting at 9:00 am.
Reuben is survived by his sister Faith (Gerald) Hein of Marion, Iowa and brother Kent (Janice) of Lowden.
Reuben was proceeded in death by his parents, brother Kermit and sister Edith Sterenberg.

Mildred R. Snyder
Dixon, IA. Mildred R. Snyder, 87, of Dixon, Iowa, died on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at Dewitt Community Hospital in Dewitt, Iowa. Mildred was born on October 24, 1920, to Fred and Ella (Roseland) Pruhs. Mildred married Bill Snyder on December 15, 1942, in Wheatland, Iowa; he died May 15, 1995.
After graduating from Calamus High School, Mildred married Bill Snyder and they farmed together in rural Scott County. Mildred was active in the community serving as 4-H Leader, Cub Scout leader, and Dixon Park board member. She loved sewing and traveling and always had an active interest in her family and grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mildred Snyder will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, October 24, 2008, at Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland, with Pastor Diane Prichard officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm Thursday, October 23, 2008, at Chapman Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Dixon Fire Department, Dixon American Legion, Dixon Memorial Park or Big Rock United Church of Christ.
Mildred is survived by her sons Lynn (Patricia) of Dixon and Loren (Donna) of Metamora, Illinois; 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; and 2 sisters Marie Will and Doris Griebel both of Dewitt.

Helen S. Meyer
Lowden, IA. Helen S. Meyer, 85, of Davenport, Iowa and formerly of Lowden, Iowa, passed from this life to be with her savior, Jesus Christ, on October 9, 2008. Helen Esbaum was born September 22, 1923 to Fred and Anna (Beeth) Esbaum. She married Elmer A. Meyer on October 1, 1944, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Lowden by the late Herman Mass, and celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1994. Helen and Elmer farmed southwest of Lowden and were long-standing members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Helen also enjoyed waiting on customers at the Arrow Café in Lowden for 16 years. Elmer passed away in August of 1995 and Helen moved to Davenport in 2000 to be near her daughters. Helen always kept busy gardening, baking, crocheting and quilting. She was currently a member of Risen Christ Lutheran Church, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Risen Christ Lutheran Church or to a favorite charity.
Funeral services for Helen Meyer will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 13, 2008, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lowden, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until service time at the church on Monday.
Helen is survived by her her daughters Holly Meyer and Jayne (Bobby) Holshouser of Davenport; grandson Jarrett Holshouser; step granddaughters, Buffy (Richard) Vogt and Kelly Jensen; step-great grandchildren Sydney, Brandon, Kameron and Mayah; sister Nola (Wilbert) Wenndt, brother-in-law Dr. Kenneth Meyer and wife Bobbi, brother-in-law Kenneth Hoffman and wife Pat and several nieces and nephews.

Carlene Bixler
Clarence, IA. Carlene Bixler, 67, of Clarence, Iowa, died after a short illness on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Carlene was born on November 5, 1940, in Scott County, Iowa, to Carl and Lurene (Fox) Kelding. Carlene and Merlyn Bixler were married on August 27, 1960. Merlyn died on February 17, 2006.
Carlene worked as a beautician and was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling and especially her family.
Funeral services for Carlene will be held at St. John's United Church of Christ at 10:30 am on Friday, October 10, 2008, with Reverend David Mears officiating. Burial will follow at Clarence Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:30 to 7:30 pm on Thursday, October 9, 2008, at St. John's Church.
Carlene is survived by her sons Michael (Debra) of Clarence and Mourey (Marge) of Aurora, Ilinois; daughter Michele (Murray) Shedeck of Oxford Junction; brother Wallace (Jean) Kelding of Walcott; and 8 grandchildren.

Marlene L. Hamilton
Big Rock, Iowa. Marlene L. Hamilton, age 76, of Greely Colorado, formerly Of Big Rock Iowa, died June 7, 2008, at her home.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at St. Paul's Cemetery in Wheatland, Iowa.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Frieda Schroeder, a son, Monte Hamilton and a brother, Carl Schroeder.

Ruth E. Montz
Mechanicsville. Ruth E. Montz, age 83, of Mechanicsville, Iowa died on Thursday, September 25, 2008 at Clarence Nursing Home, in Clarence, Iowa. Ruth was born on September 6, 1925, in Stanwood, Iowa, to Alfred and Ida (Baker) Meyer. She married Kenneth Montz on October 23, 1949 in Stanwood.
Ruth was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Presbyterian Church and the Red Hat Society. She was an avid sports fan, enjoyed crossword puzzles and was very active in the Mechanicsville Community. She especially loved her family, grandkids and all their activites. The family would like to give special thanks to Jessi, Julie, Ginger and the staff at St. Luke's Hospice, the visiting Angels and the Clarence Nursing Home family for their loving care.
Funeral services for Ruth will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville on Monday, September 29, 2008, at 10:30am, with Pastor Jeremy Hudson officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Mechanicsville. Visitation will be 2:00-5:00pm on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence with an Eastern Star Service at 5:00pm. Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Hospice or Mechanicsville Fire and Ambulance Volunteers.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 58 years Kenneth; daughter Susan (Carter) Mullen of Scottsdale, Arizona; sons Brian (Kathy) Montz of Hiawatha, and Brent (Jody) Montz of Mechanicsville; grandchildren Dylan, Drew and Carly Montz of Mechanicsville; sister-in-law Katie Meyer of Stanwood and her family.

Philip "Gor" Sheldon
Clarence. Philip "Gor" Sheldon, 56, of Clarence, Iowa, died of a heart attack on Monday, September 22, 2008, while working at River Valley Coop in Stanwood, Iowa. Philip was born on October 10, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Gilbert and Rosalie (Sander) Sheldon. Philip married Jacquelyn Wenndt on September 2, 1978, in Lowden, Iowa. Philip served in the Marines from 1971-1973. He was an avid hunter, loved playing basketball with younger kids and enjoyed the Outdoor Channel. He was well known for his unique dancing. He was a member of St. John's Church.
Funeral services for Philip will be held at 10:30am on Friday, September 26, 2008, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Clarence, with Reverend David Mears officiating. Following services his body will be cremated with inurnment at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00pm on Thursday, September 25, at St. John's Church.
Philip is survived by wife Jacquelyn; daughters Regan (Matt) Jacobson of Minona, Iowa, Rachel Sheldon of Onalaska, Wisconsin, and Randi Sheldon (Cody Phillips) of Marion, Iowa; his parents Gib and Rosalie Sheldon of Clarence; sisters Connie Crock of Mankato, Minnesota, Janice Gsell of Eldridge, Iowa, Barb Sheldon of Redford, Michigan, Nancy Sheldon of Los Angeles, California, and Jill (Craig) Hlas of Cedar Rapids; brother Ron Sheldon of Lompoc, California; granddaughter Morgan; and special nieces and nephews.
Philip was proceeded in death by his brother, Dennis.
