Alyce A. Weatherwax, age 94, of Clarence, Iowa, died on March 11, 2012 at Clarence Nursing Home. Alyce was born September 14, 1917, in North of Clarence, Iowa to Glen Kelly and Elizabeth (Spear) Kelly. Alyce married Richard Weatherwax, a neighbor, on November 19, 1939 and they were the first couple married in the Clarence United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Clarence United Methodist Church, Iowa, with Carol Mart and Karmen Jamison officiating. Burial will follow at Clarence Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 14, at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Edna Zybell Library (Clarence) or the Clarence Nursing Home. Alyce graduated from Clarence High School in 1935. She was on the basketball team that went to the state champion tournament in 1935. Alyce was a true farm housewife, very active in the community and church, the women's society, and other church activities. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Alyce and her sister Donna swam across the Mississippi River at the widest point, at Moline-Quad Cities, and with the current, it took them over seven miles downstream to cross. Challenges were never a concern. She is survived by son Tom (Kay) Weatherwax of Logansport, Indiana; daughter Sally Sawyer of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Todd (Jill) Sawyer of Stanwood, Gina Tasler of Phoenix, Arizona, and Steve Drye, Michelle Hage, Kris (Harrison) Chauncy, David (Shanon) Drye, all of Indianapolis, and Kevin (Beth) Weatherwax of Logansport, Indiana, and Craig (Lori) Weatherwax of Maryland; 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Alyce was preceded in death by her parents, sister Donna Hart in December 1989, and her husband in December 2000.
