Darlene E. Koering, age 95 of Stanwood, passed away on Friday December 9, 2016 at the Clarence Nursing Home. Visitation will be held on Friday December 16 from 4:30-7 P.M at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence. Burial will be held at the Stanwood Cemetery at a later date.
Darlene was born on April 13, 1921 to Henry F. and Elizabeth (Kokemiller) Haerther in Shellsburg, Iowa. She married Arthur C. Koering on September 11, 1946 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Newhall. He passed away in 2004.
Darlene graduated from Newhall School in 1939. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Stanwood American Legion Auxiliary, Women Marine Association and Marine Corps League. She served in the WWII Women's Marine Reserve from September of 1943 until December of 1945 and was selected to march in Roosevelt's funeral procession. Darlene worked for serveral businesses as a bookkeeper and also as a secretary for Lincoln School. She lived in Mountain Home, AR. for several years before returning to Stanwood.
She is survived by her sons, Lester (Kathy) of Stanwood and Jeffrey (Kathleen) of Coralville; grandchildren, Susan (Nate) Orvis, Amy (Ron) Jackson, Jerry (Brandi) Koering, Jason Koering, Kelly (Eric) Cook, and Drew Koering; 5 great grandchildren; sister, Mildred (Richard) Homan of Mountain Home, AR.; and several nieces and nephews.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, James; brother, Waldo Haerther; and sister, Kathryn Adele.
