Debbie "Bobbi" Harms, age 56, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2007 at the Cedar Rapids home of her sister, after a recent cancer diagnosis. She was the beloved sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and great aunt to: Sharon and Terry Shaffer; Nancy Simonis; Melanie and Tom Raulerson; Stephanie, Julio and Harrison Martinex; John Karen and Lucas Shaffer; Jason, Jenny, Ben and Alex Shaffer; Erik, Samantha, Evan and Erik Michael Simonis; Joshua and Amy Raulerson; Graham Raulerson; and Leah Raulerson. She was also a second mother to hundreds of students during her 34-year career as the Art and Speech Teacher / Speech and Drama Coach of North Cedar Community Schools (formerly Clarence-Lowden).
The youngest of four daughters, Debbie was born May 10, 1951 to Richard and Jacqueline Harms of Roselawn Hereford Farms in Alden, Iowa. She sang in "The Harms Sisters" quartet with her siblings from the age of five, and participated in vocal and instrumental music, speech, drama, and art. Debbie was also active in her church and community. She was a member of 4-H, the National Honor Society, the Order of Rainbow for Girls, the Junior Hereford Association and Auxiliary, her local education association, ISEA, NEA and the Clarence United Methodist Church.
After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado in 1973, Debbie began teaching in Clarence. She built a strong speech and drama program which consistently received top ratings and All-State recognition, where the clever and unique Choral Reading scripts she wrote with her students drew standing-room-only crowds. In addition to serving as a respected judge for numerous speech contests over the years, she developed a reputation for producing plays and musicals of the highest caliber, designing costumes, sets, sound and lights while directing and teaching students the many other aspects of live theater production.
A prolific artist, Debbie worked in a variety of media. While a gifted landscape artist, her favorite subjects were her students and the cats and dogs she frequently rescued and adopted. Debbie had a lifelong commitment to "critters" and kids.
