Donald Keith Coppess, age 79, of Stanwood, Iowa, died on September 27, 2011 at Mechanicsville Rehab and Care Center after a short illness. Donald was born June 6, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, IA to Howard Coppess and Violet (Fairley) Coppess. Donald married Lulu Grace Longerbeam on September 27, 1952 in Stanwood. She died July 9, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, September 30, 2011, at Stanwood Union Church in Stanwood, Iowa, with Pastor Phil Leipold officiating and Jo Brown as organist. Pallbearers are Chris Coppess, Danny Coppess, Brad Coppess, Michael Coppess, Donnie Keith Coppess and Robert Flockhart. Honorary pallbearers are all of his grandchildren. Casual attire would be appreciated at the service. Burial will follow at Stanwood Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, September 29, at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. The family wishes to send a special thank you to St. Luke's Hospice. Donald graduated from Stanwood High School. He served in the United States Navy from June 1952 to June 1960 with honors of Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal, National Defense Service Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. He farmed and worked at Midland Forge in Cedar Rapids. He is survived by sons Don (Evelyn) of Texas, Delbert (Beverly) of California, Dennis (Linda) of Mechanicsville, and Darren (Cheryl) of Stanwood; daughter Debra (Michael) Bixler of Clarence; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews; sisters Donna Lou (Russ) Rhoads of Marion, Darlene (Bob) Flockhart of Stanwood, Deanna Schnipkoweit of Wyoming, IA, and Doris (Dick) McAtee of Wyoming, IA; and\nbrothers Dale (Darlene) of Stanwood, Darrell (Joann) of Stanwood, and Delbert of Tipton. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and nephew Donald Schnipkoweit.
