Eleanor Evelyn Hass Thomson, age 97 of Stanwood, passed away on Tuesday April 8, 2014 in the hospice unit at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held on Saturday April 12, 2014 at 2:00 P.M at the Stanwood Union Church with Pastor Phil Leipold officiating. Burial will follow in the Stanwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday April 11, 2014 from 4-7 P.M at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence. Eleanor was born on March 7, 1917 in Cedar County to Herman and Katherine (Schroeder) Hass. She married Charles William "Chick" Thomson on March 26, 1938 in Iowa City. He died on October 13, 1993. Eleanor was baptized at West Bethal Church west of Tipton on March 9, 1919. She graduated from Tipton High School in 1935 and went to Tipton Junior College for a year, and then Coe College for one year. Her and her husband Charles "Chick" farmed 30 years before their retirement on the same farm. Eleanor enjoyed sports with her husband and loved music. She was a former member of the Red Oak Presbyterian Church and later joined the Stanwood Union Church, Farm Bureau, church circle, and Fremont homemakers. Eleanor was a past member of the Stanwood Women's Club and a 50 year member of the Red Oak Grove King's Daughters. She was the organist at Red Oak Presbyterian Church many years ago and part time organist at the Stanwood Union Church. Eleanor was also organist for King's Daughters and the church circle. She gave several scholarships to the Stanwood School. She is survived by her nieces & nephews. Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Harold; and sister, Opal. The family would like to thank the hospice unit at St. Luke's Hospital for the great care they gave to Eleanor.
