Ellen Horstmann, age 91, of Wheatland, Iowa, died at Wheatland Manor Nursing Home on May 16, 2011. Ellen was born July 18, 1919, in Wheatland, Iowa to Louis Kelting and Mary (Copp) Kelting.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, May 20, 2011, at St. Paul's United Church Of Christ in Wheatland, Iowa, with Rev. John Cofield officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, May 19, at Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland. Pallbearers are Kevin, Kent, David, Dean and Glen Wiebel and Ronald Schmidt.
Ellen attended Red Oak School, and graduated from Wheatland High School. She attended Cornell and Iowa State Teachers College, and received her BA in Elementary Education from Marycrest College in Davenport. She began her teaching career in Red Oak country school, also teaching in various schools, including Big Rock, Toronto, and Massillon. Ellen taught second grade in Lowden Elementary and Clarence-Lowden Elementary, from which she retired in 1981. She enjoyed traveling, visiting many scenic wonders of the U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii, Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada and Newfoundland. She was a lifetime member of St. Paul's United Church Of Christ and a past president of the Martha Aid Society. She was an active member in the Senior Citizens group, and the Wheatland Manor Nursing Home Auxiliary.
She is survived by sister Margery (Melvin) Wiebel of Lowden and 10 nieces and nephews.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Marie (Mike) Schmidt and Mildred (Raldo) Riedesel.
