Ellis I. Ahrens, age 85, of New Liberty, Iowa, died February 11, 2008, at Genesis West Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa. Ellis was born May 9, 1922, in rural Bennett to Walter and Hazel (Fell) Ahrens. Ellis was married on February 9, 1946 in Davenport to Della Deverwaere. She died January 28, 1997. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, February 15, 2008, at Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland with Reverend Barb Muhs officiating and military rites by the Dixon Legion. Visitation will be held from 3:00-7:00 on Thursday, February 14, at Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland. The body will be cremated after visitation. The family will scatter Ellis' ashes at a later date. Ellis was a very succesful father and farmer. He enjoyed playing cards, the Wheel of Fortune (the letter game, as he called it), traveling, gardening and being social. No one was a stranger to Ellis. He was a 50 year member of the Dixon Legion. He was a WWII Navy Veteran. Ellis is survived by his children Ann (Will) Williams of Overland Park, Kansas, Jane (Larry) Jones of Humeston, Iowa, Jill (Mike) Reedy of Eldridge, Iowa, Ellis A. Ahrens of Davenport, Patrick (Laura) Ahrens of Wheatland, Iowa, Mike (Janet) Ahrens of Roanoke, Illinois, Eddie (Deb) Ahrens of Dixon, Iowa, Grover (Sue) Ahrens of Blue Grass, Iowa, Arthur (Denise) Ahrens of New Liberty, and Abby (Doyal) Hatfield of CrealSprings, Illinois; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother Gene of Davenport, Iowa; sister Patricia Starr of Rock Island; many nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Leona Kuberski of Moline. Ellis was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson, and four brothers. Memorials may be made to the New Liberty fire department or the Dixon Legion.
