Gary Lee Pepmeier, age 63 of Wheatland, passed away on Saturday January 23, 2021 at his home. Services will be held at a later date.
Gary was born on November 13, 1957 to Alfred and Coletta (Williams) Pepmeier in Davenport, Iowa.
He is survived by his brother Greg (Gayle) Pepmeier of DeWitt and sister Missy (Scott) Shepler of Chillicothe, IL.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents.
Gary believed in brevity. Written correspondence was brief. Emails were often only one or two sentences. Conversations could be succinct, ending with a deep, stretched-out "Byyyeee" and a laugh, then he'd wait for you to hang up first. If you were lucky enough to get to know him, you'd be amazed at the breadth of his interests. A voracious reader, he loved science fiction, philosophy, and collections of positive affirmations, which he'd pass along to others. Clutter of any kind offended him. He loved going to movies, avoided most yard work, and was a connoisseur of microwave meals. He never mastered the art of backing up a vehicle, but was quite skilled at avoiding photographers. Gary liked to keep journals and would support his community in any way he could.
Gary graduated from Wheatland Community High School in 1976. He spent two years at the University of Iowa before serving six years in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Robert E. Lee submarine. He completed his degree after leaving the service and graduated with his Bachelor's degree. Gary spent his career at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before taking an early retirement. He surprised all of us by becoming a loving and attentive care provider for Dad.
A unique and private person, Gary was at times head strong and stubborn, but would do anything he could for those he cared for. He will be deeply missed.
Memorials may be sent to Greg at: 2587 Highway 30 DeWitt, IA 52742.
