Gaylon Pewe Sr., 67, of rural New Liberty, passed away Wednesday October 30th 2013, surrounded by his loving wife and family at Genesis Medical Center West campus, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held on Monday November 4, 2013 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Wheatland at 10:30 A.M with Reverend John Cofield officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Patrick Cemetery in Big Rock. Visitation will be held on Sunday November 3, 2013 from 2-6 P.M. at Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland. Gaylon was born on February 1st, 1946, one of 9 children, to Gilbert Pewe Sr. and Yvonne (Snyder) Pewe in rural Calamus. Gaylon graduated from Wheatland High School in 1964 and began working at Alcoa before being drafted into the army in 1966. He served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968 achieving the rank of Sergeant. He worked at Caterpillar Inc in Mt. Joy for 22 years, Louis Rich in West Liberty for 10 years, and Red Jacket in Davenport for 5 years. He also worked for many years part time on his Uncle Willie Pewe's farm in Dixon Iowa, something he enjoyed and dearly loved. He continued working on the same farm for his nephews, Jeff and Marlon Vander Heiden and with his cousin Patti Anderson. He enjoyed his days working with the three of them very much. After retiring in 2009 he worked for the Dixon Memorial Park mowing the lawn and taking care of the grounds. He also enjoyed helping with the landscaping of the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Big Rock, and at times doing odd jobs for his brother Gilbert and his trucking business. Gaylon married Regina Vander Heiden on April 20th 1968 in Big Rock, Iowa. They lived in Big Rock for four years before moving to rural New Liberty, where they raised five children. Melissa (Tim) Clarke of Temecula CA, Gaylon Jr. (Susan) of Clinton, Marika of Wheatland, Derron (Maggie) of Toronto, and Makala of Durant. He was a very proud grandfather of Logan, Trevor, Jason and Nathan Clarke, Cyrus Pewe, Abagale, Samantha, Wyatt and Maranda Pewe. He also has three step-grandchildren, Jesse and Christopher Pena, St. Petersburg FL, and Amanda Pena, Davenport, and 5 step-great-grandchildren. In their free time Gaylon and Regina loved to spend time together working around their house as well as helping their children with projects. Gaylon enjoyed working outside and took a lot of pride in the condition of his yard and his John Deere lawn mowers. He enjoyed golfing and all of his golfing friends at Wapsi Oaks golf course. He also could be heard by all while encouraging his kids and grandkids at their sporting events. His children have fond memories of watching Gaylon play fastpitch softball for the Dixon Memorial Park as well as getting up early during the summer to get to go golfing with their dad. He is survived by his wife of 45 years; children and grandchildren; brothers Eldon (Arvella) of Dixon, Dawson (Sandy) of Davenport, Gilbert (Sue) of New Liberty, Robin (Teresa) of Wheatland, Kyle (Marilyn) of Donahue, Devere of Wheatland and a sister, Garnett Albright of Lakeland FL; a brother in law, Bill Young of Davenport; a special uncle, Willie Pewe of Davenport; and many extended family members including close in-laws and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Yolanda (Yogi) Young. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the family for a charitable donation at a later date.
