Gerald J. �Gary� Hein, 87, of Marion, died at his home Saturday, July 14, 2012. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at St. Paul�s Lutheran Church, Marion, with the Rev. Gregory Williamson officiating. Burial: Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Lowden, with graveside military rites by the Lowden American Legion. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence and one hour before services Wednesday at the church.
Born Jan. 12, 1925, in Lowden, Iowa, the son of John and Eleanor (Bunge) Hein, he married Faith Strackbein on Aug. 20, 1950. Gerald graduated from Lowden High School in 1943 and was drafted into the Army on Sept. 13, 1943, being discharged Jan. 14, 1946. He was in World War II and received the purple heart. Gerald worked at the Lowden Standard gas station for seven years and then worked for Rockwell Collins in the punch press department for 27 years, retiring Dec. 31, 1983.
Survivors include his wife, Faith; a son, Timothy (Jean) of Columbia, S.C.; daughter, Geraldine (Timothy) Schmidt of Cedar Rapids; granddaughter, Kirsten Hein of Chicago; brother, Harvey of Lowden; and sister, Eunice (George) Morden of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Leora.
