Herbert F. Howell, age 97, of New Liberty, Iowa, died at Silvercrest Senior Living in Davenport on July 17, 2011. Herbert was born February 15, 1914, in Long Grove, Iowa to Walter Howell and Matilda (Bloom) Howell. Herbert married Mildred Bowen on June 7, 1947 at Price, Utah. She died April 23, 1989.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland, Iowa, with Pastor Barbra Keiper officiating. Burial will follow at New Liberty Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 20, at Chapman's in Wheatland. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial for the Dixon Legion and Dixon Park.
Herbert and Mildred met on Treasure Island in San Francisco, CA while both were serving in the Navy during WWII. He served as a radioman in the submarine services. After their service to our country they moved to eastern Iowa, eventually settling in New Liberty in 1955. He farmed for 21 years before retirement in 1976. Herb enjoyed playing the banjo for many years performing with several local musicians on venues throughout eastern Iowa, including the Durant Polka Fest.
He is survived by 5 sons: Jerry (Kris) of Pueblo, CO, Tim (Holly) of New Liberty, Tom (Merry) of Moscow, IA, Stanley (Sally) of New Liberty, Rodney (Nancy) of Johnston, IA; daughter Mary Howell of Bettendorf; 9 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister Anna.
