Herman "Pete" Helmold, age 92, of Clarence, Iowa, died on Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Clarence Nursing Home. Herman was born June 29, 1918, on the family farm, in rural Clarence to Heinrich Helmold and Sophie (Deerberg) Helmold. Herman married Margaret Anderson on August 8, 1940, at Little Brown Church, Nashua.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at St. John's United Church Of Christ in Clarence, Iowa, with Reverend David Mears officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 30, at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence.
"Pete" farmed all his life on the family farm south of Clarence until moving to Clarence in 1978. He served on the council of St. John's Reformed Church in Tipton and later transferred to St. John's United Church of Christ, Clarence. He served on the Clarence Telephone Board for 18 years. "Pete" was a mild mannered man who cared deeply for his family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was an avid bird-watcher and dog lover.
He is survived by his wife Margaret; two daughters, Janice Bock of Sebring, Florida and Beverly (Robert) Skladzien of Maquoketa; a son, Allen (Deborah) of Lowden; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister Leona Conrad of Clarence.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, brother Leonard, infant-sister Norma, and son-in-law Neil Bock.
