Jenira "Jan" L. Thien, age 96 of Mechanicsville died December 3, 2021 at the Mechanicsville Specialty Care Center.
Jan was born on December 9, 1924, the daughter of Clifford and Frieda Johnson. She graduated from Davenport High School. She was united in marriage to Melvin Thien of Tipton on February 20, 1944. The union produced three children, Melinda, Tim and Tarry Thien.
The couple lived in the Tipton area for many years. Jan turned their garage into a quilting business and they also owned a dry cleaning and laundromat in Stanwood. They were a hard working couple and always on the go. Jan drove a school bus and was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville for many years. She enjoyed coffee hour with her friends, playing cards, and an occasional margarita.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister June Geiger and her daughter Melinda Mittlestadt; and newborn twin grandchildren, Kelli and Kris Thien.
She is survived by her sons, Tim (Sue) Thien of Ames and Tarry (Vicki) Thien of Mechanicsville; five grandchildren: Megan (Jeff) Blazavich, Brandi (Chris) Gniffke, Kari (Matt) Phillips, Kelsey Thien and Joe Thien; and one great grandchild, Tristian Gniffke.
A celebration of life will be held at the Mechanicsville Memorial Building on Wednesday December 8 from 11:00am to 1:00pm with a light lunch. A private burial will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mechanicsville at a later date.
