Leona Helmold, age 99, of Lowden, Iowa, died February 6, 2010, at the Cedar Manor Nursing Home-Tipton, where she had been a resident since 2001. Leona was born March 21, 1910, in Lowden, Iowa, to Henry and Augusta (Becker) Boedeker. Leona married Walter Helmold February 11, 1932, at Lowden. He died February 11, 1981. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at Zion United Church Of Christ in Lowden, Iowa, with Reverend Barbara Muhs officiating. Burial will follow at Lowden Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon till service time at the church. Arrangements are with Chapman Funeral Home-Clarence. Leona was a 1928 graduate of Lowden High School and was a member of Zion United Church of Christ where she had been church organist for many years. She loved quilting and made a quilt for each of her granddaughters. She is survived by her daughters: Joanne (Wendell) Beckley of Tipton and Shirley (Robert) McMillin of Kansas City, Missouri; 4 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a step-granddaughter.
