Obituary

Lester A. Peckenschneider, 90, of New Liberty, Iowa died on Saturday, September 23, 2006, at Genesis East Medical Center. Mr. Peckenschneider was born on November 21, 1915 in rural New Liberty to Loise (Hansen) and August Peckenschneider. Lester married Bernadine Horstmann on June 6, 1946 in Wheatland, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Big Rock, Iowa, with Reverend Laird Keever officiating. Burial will be at Maysville Cemetery with graveside military rites by Dixon American Legion. Visition is Tuesday, September 26, 2006, from 4:00-7:00 PM at Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland, Iowa. Mr. Peckenschneider served in the United States Army, 2nd Battalion, and 36th Engineer Combat Regiment in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater from 1942 to 1945. His different campaigns include Algeria-French, Moroccan, Tunisian, Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, Central Europe. He had received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon W/1 Silver & 3 bronze Battle Stars, Bronze Service Arrowhead, 6 overseas Service Bars. Mr. Peckenschneider was the owner and operator of Peckenschneider Oil Company retiring in 1979 after 31 years. He had served on the New Liberty town council from 1946-1993 and was mayor of New Liberty for nearly 30 years. He had been a bank director for Liberty Trust & Savings bank for 31 years. He was a member of the Dixon American Legion and the Immanuel United Church of Christ Big Rock where he had been a former board member. Lester Peckenschneider is survived by his wife Bernadine, two daughters: Diana (Gregg) Durlam of Ankeney, Mary (Jim) Pelzer of Tipton, and five grandchildren: Dan Durlam, Mikal (Megan) Bisbee-Durlam, Tracy (Andy) Timm, Kurt & Chris Pelzer. He was proceded in death by his parents, a son Richard, and sisters Adeline Wehde, Alice Gesell, Elmora Keppy and brothers Raymond, Allen and Harvey.
