Luverne A. Pingel, 85, of Lowden, Iowa, died November 22, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa. Mr. Pingel was born on June 25, 1921, in Big Rock, Iowa, to Walter L. and Hulda (Petersen) Pingel. Luverne and Dorothy Mingst were united in marriage at the St. John's Church in Clarence, Iowa.
Funeral services for Luverne Pingel will be held on Monday, November 27, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion United Church of Christ in Lowden, Iowa. Reverend Barb Muhs will be officiating with Marilyn Klahn as the organist. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, 2006, at the Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland, Iowa. Honorary Pallbearers are Kristi Dunn, Jennifer Parker, Allison Kasparek, and Megan Pingel. Pallbearers are Chad Harris, Matthew Pingel, Adam Pingel, Thomas Pingel, and Alex Pingel.
Luverne Pingel attended grade school in rural Scott county and High School in Wheatland, graduating in 1939. In August of 1944 Luverne was called to serve in the US Army and sent to the European Theater. He served with the 94th Infantry Division in the 3rd Army for 18 months. Upon returning to civilian life, Luverne began a farming career north of Lowden. Luverne served on the Zion church council and several terms as Massillon Township ASCS Committeeman. He also was Post Commander for the American Legion Post #366, County Commander for Cedar County American Legion, and an active member of the 94th Infantry Association. He retired farming in 1990 and moved to Lowden.
Luverne is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Lowden; sons Stephen Ray and wife Linda of Maryville, Illinois, Gregory Lee and wife Denise of Ely, Iowa; daughter Rebecca Sue and husband William Race of Clement, California;\n9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; brother Merle and wife Erma of New liberty, Iowa.
Luverne was preceded in death by his parents, a grandchild, a brother, and a sister in infancy.
