Obituary

Paul "Pike" Hasselbusch, age 91, of Clarence, Iowa, died on October 23, 2011 at home with his family at his side after a brief illness. Paul was born December 6, 1919, in Clarence, IA to Paul Hasselbusch and Pauline (Meier) Hasselbusch. In 1940, he married Evelyn Oldorf from Stanwood and they made their home on the family farm where they raised their family, Allan and Mary Kay. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at St. John's United Church Of Christ in Clarence, Iowa, with Rev. David Mears officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 25, at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence. Pike was baptized and confirmed at St. John's United Church of Christ in Clarence, He attended country school for 8 years and graduated from Clarence High in 1937 where he was an outstanding athlete at baseball, basketball and track. Pike was a lifelong member of St. John's church, served on the church council, sang in the choir for many years and with Evelyn they were Junior High Youth Counselors. He served on the Clarence School Board, the Cedar County Cattleman's Association and was on the original board that formed and started the 3/30 Golf and Country Club in Lowden. Pike and Evelyn enjoyed many years playing golf and made a great team winning a few awards along the way. He especially enjoyed his time working with the kids' golf program at the club. They spent many winters vacationing in Arizona. Pike enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards with his buddies, the Hawkeyes and the Cubbies. He is survived by son Allan and friend Janann of Clarence, IA; daughter Mary Kay and husband Gary Hamilton of Clarence, IA; 2 sisters-in-laws: Jean Oldorf and Marie Hasselbusch; 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and many nephews, nieces and friends. Paul was preceded in death by parents, wife, 3 brothers: Melvin, Arlo and Elwood.
