Shirley was born August 14, 1935 in Clarence to John and Clara (Gade) Burmeister. She was united in marriage to Harlan Meyer on November 5, 1960 in Lowden. He passed away on October 20, 2024.
Shirley is survived by her sons Mike (Julie) of Cedar Rapids and Brian (Sandra) of Prairieburg; daughters Linda and Lori Meyer of Cedar Rapids, Pam (Mark) Spickermann of Urbana, and Sherry (Tony) Sander of Clarence; sister Kenneatha Meier of Clarence; and sisters-in-law Fannie Burmeister and Betty Ann Miller of Clarence.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters Bernice, Luella, and Illeen; and brothers Lloyd and Dale.
Shirley was an amazing woman whose kindness, strength, and love touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and a hardworking farm wife who stood faithfully beside her husband, Harlan, through all the joys and challenges of farm life.
She was an awesome cook, and many children will fondly remember coming home from school to find fresh, homemade pastries waiting for them. She found joy in the simple things in life. Shirley loved canning, puzzles, word searches, and especially music. She was a kind and caring woman who gave of herself generously and never needed recognition for all that she did.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. John’s United Church of Christ or the Clarence Nursing Home.
