Formerly Shirley Ann Koch, she was born on May 24, 1929 in rural Lowden, Iowa to Otto and Mabel (Pingel) Koch. She was a 1947 graduate of Lowden High School and on May 21, 1950 was united in marriage to Robert E. (Bob) Schanze at Zion United Church of Christ in Lowden. On December 31, 1955 their son Michael Robert was born. Bob passed away suddenly in July of 1969. In 1980 Shirley met her long-time companion, William Schroeder, at a dance. They enjoyed over 30 years together before Bill passed away in 2011.
Shirley was a member of St. Paul's UCC in Wheatland since 1951 and also belonged to the Wheatland American Legion Auxiliary for over 40 years. She was a member of the Town and Country Card Club for over 50 years. She was employed by Wheatland Manor for over 20 years as head of housekeeping, retiring in 1992. Shirley enjoyed cooking and baking and in earlier years looked forward to hosting family for holidays. She also loved to clean. Over the years her family would tease her by saying "even the dirt in this house is clean, if you can find any." She enjoyed reading cookbooks, trying new recipes, and watching both Chicago Cubs baseball and Iowa Hawkeye basketball.
Left to honor her memory are her daughter-in-law, Mary Schanze of DeWitt; granddaughters, Michelle of Davenport and Melissa of DeWitt; and great granddaughters, Mya, Madelyn and Isabella. Also surviving are Bill's brother Roger (Barb) Schroeder and his family along with Shirley's special friends Kathy Willet and Velma Forret.
Preceding Shirley in death were her parents; husband, Bob; son, Michael in 1998; and her companion, Bill Schroeder.
In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy it is suggested that memorials be made to St. Paul's Church in Wheatland or to the family for a memorial fund to be established.
