Obituary

Wayne Edward Betts, age 75 of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday October 31, 2026. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday November 4, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Clarence with Pastor Frank Shepherd, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church.

Wayne was born on March 18, 1951 in Waterloo, Iowa to Carl and Luella Betts. Wayne graduated from Oelwein High School in 1969, and went on to obtain his Associates degree in Electronic Engineering Technology in 1973 from Hawkeye Institute of Technology. He worked at Unity Point St. Luke’s for over 41 years as a Biomedical Technician. After retirement, he continued to volunteer for the next 10 years. He was an active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Jones County Amateur ham radio club, Mechanicsville bingo club, and many more. Wayne was a man of many passions. He enjoyed baking, polka music, family fishing trips to Rush Lake, and was a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan. Above all else, what meant the most to him was his family, quality time, and making memories.

While working at Unity Point, he met the love of his life Diane, whom he shared almost 49 beautiful years with. They were joined in marriage on November 5, 1977. Of all blessings in his life, none brought him greater pride or joy than being a devoted husband. Wayne and Diane then welcomed their 3 children. He was the cherished grandfather of 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Wayne touched the lives of everyone who had the honor of knowing him. His selflessness, warmth, and generous spirit will be remembered forever. Wayne leaves a legacy of his infectious laughter, love, and kindness that will be carried on by those who knew and adored him.

He is survived by his wife Diane; children Tina (Phillip) Plumb of Terre Haute, IN, Mark (Keeley) Betts of Marion, and Sheila (Curtis) Russell of Van Meter; honorary son Owen Brobst; grandchildren Emily (Damon) Willis, Jaykob (Thomas) Wallace, Elyssa (Blake) Wallace, Jaxson Russell, Rhett Russell, Elsie Degel, and Owen Degel; great grandchildren Walker Willis and Holden Willis; siblings Russell (Marla) Betts of Waterloo and Mona Betts of Shawano, WI; and many other loved ones who will miss him deeply.

Wayne is reunited in heaven with his parents, Carl and Luella; mother-in-law Mildred Doermann; brother-in-law Larry (Elda) Doermann; sister-in-law Sheryl Koch; and daughter-in-law Christina Betts.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the St. John’s food pantry or to Unity Point Hospice Care.
