Woodrow "Woody" Horstmann, age 95, of Big Rock, Iowa, died December 30, 2009, at Genesis West Medical Center-Davenport. Woodrow was born January 28, 1914, in Big Rock to Grover Horstmann and Bertha Homrighausen. Woodrow Married Elba Petersen May 23, 1937, at Wheatland. She died in 1997. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, January 4, 2010, at Christian Free Lutheran Church in Wheatland, with Pastor Eric Swenson officiating. Burial will follow at Big Rock Cemetery, Big Rock. Visitation will be held from 2:00-5:00 pm on Sunday, January 3, at Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland. Memorials may be made to Immanuel United Church of Christ-Big Rock, where he was a member Woodrow and Melba owned and operated Horstmann's General Store in Big Rock since 1942, and it has been in the Horstmann family since 1897. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. In his younger days he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball, and, in later years, bowling and golf. Woodrow is survived by 2 daughters-Margo (Ron) Mohr of Big Rock and Linda (Brian) Riemer of Delavan, Wisconsin; 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren,3 great-great grandchildren; a brother Kenneth of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and formerly of Bennett; and sister Bernadine Peckenschneider of New Liberty. Woodrow was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers Norman, Elmer, Grover Jr., and a sister Florence Bethurum.
